The General Education Outcomes are the knowledge, skills and abilities that Reading Area Community College graduates should be able to demonstrate in the workplace and society of the 21st Century. These institutional core competencies are integrated into the general education core program of each College associate degree program to ensure that students have learned the critical skills to succeed in today’s rapidly-changing, global and technological society. Therefore, each graduate of an associate degree program will be expected to learn and show competencies in the following areas:
Written Communication
A graduate will demonstrate understanding of purpose and style of various genres of discourse by focusing writing around a main idea; analyzing and developing cohesive written texts; and employing appropriate sentence structure, grammar, and word choice.
Oral Communication
A graduate will apply the rhetorical and ethical principles of public speaking by analyzing effective speeches, alleviating communication apprehension, and effectively planning and delivering various types of speeches.
Information Literacy
A graduate will evaluate information by collecting, organizing, interpreting, and synthesizing credible sources ethically and legally.
Critical Analysis and Ethical Reasoning
A graduate will integrate knowledge, experience, and evidence to make sound and ethical judgments by evaluating the validity of ideas and employing logical and creative reasoning to formulate an informed argument or conclusion.
Quantitative Reasoning
A graduate will be able to compute, interpret, and represent information using mathematical applications by analyzing data, drawing appropriate conclusions, and sharing processes, results, and conclusions.
Scientific Reasoning
A graduate will be able to apply the methods of scientific inquiry by extracting and interpreting information in scientific contexts; converting textual information into mathematical forms; drawing logical conclusions based on observations, testing, and results; and evaluating experimental methods and conclusions.
Cultural Understanding
A graduate will identify ways culture influences group and individual behavior and demonstrate an awareness of the value of diverse perspectives and of cultural humility and sensitivity.
Aesthetic Understanding & Human Creativity
A graduate will explore human creativity by identifying, appreciating, and critiquing its expression and representation of human experience, and/or employing creativity in a process of design or problem-solving.
Digital & Technical Competence
A graduate will utilize digital tools to share, manage, analyze, and evaluate information by using various software applications and creating digital materials while recognizing issues of social and ethical responsibility in the digital world.
