This program is offered in partnership with FirstEnergy Service Company. It prepares students for potential employment as a line or substation worker in electric and related utility industries. Students gain knowledge and skills in DC/AC electricity, electrical circuits, electrical control wiring, wiring systems, transformers, power generation, and power distribution. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction students also participate in hands-on training at a local FirstEnergy electric utility company training facility. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be more employable and may command a higher starting wage rate than the typical entry-level employee in the utility industry. Completion does not guarantee employment with FirstEnergy. Enrollment in the program is restricted by a selection process conducted by FirstEnergy Service Company.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate effective technical writing skills.
- Demonstrate work practices that comply with OSHA and safety guidelines for the electric utility industry.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of various hand tools used in the electrical utility industry.
- Operate equipment used in the maintenance and repair of electric utility systems.
- Obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or other appropriate industrial truck operation certification.
- Troubleshoot faults in both above ground and underground circuits or substation systems.
- Repair deenergized and energized circuits as appropriate to line or substation work.

Students who declare their intended major to be Electric Utility Technology are not considered for acceptance into FirstEnergy’s Power Systems Institute until the following requirements are completed.
1. Technical Evaluation

3. Background Check
4. DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate
5. Potential Drug Test
6. Qualifying School
7. Interview
Candidates successful in completing all steps identified above are ranked by FirstEnergy who ultimately determines student enrollment.
