The Medical Office/Health Records Specialist Program is designed to provide students with the competencies necessary to obtain employment in a variety of roles within the medical office and in the health records field. Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of healthcare environments such as physicians’ offices, hospitals, clinics, specialty practices, health insurance offices, and nursing homes. College credit may be granted through Tech Prep articulation agreements between RACC and approved secondary schools.
Program Competencies
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to apply keyboarding and proofreading skills to a variety of correspondence (letters, memorandums, reports, e-mails, and tables) using formats such as straight-copy, edited, and dictated.
- Use appropriate medical office procedures in areas of medical ethics, electronic health records management, telephone communications, incoming and outgoing mail, appointment scheduling, and simulation projects.
- Create integrated documents, worksheets, databases, and presentations suitable for coursework, professional purposes, and personal use using personal productivity software.
- Define medical terminology used in healthcare delivery.
- Define the contents of an electronic health record and the operation of an electronic medical record system.
- Demonstrate knowledge of concepts common to medical insurance plans in health care delivery.
- Summarize federal legislation and regulations affecting health care.
- Understand concepts common to medical insurance plans in health care delivery.
- Utilize a personal computer to prepare documents using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software and to perform basic navigation of the Internet.
- Identify the purpose and provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
- Explain the legal aspects of handling electronic health records.
- Execute accurate editing of a medical record.
