Business Division
The Medical Office/Health Records Specialist Certificate program is designed to provide students with the competencies necessary to obtain entry-level employment in the healthcare environment. All coursework may later be applied to an Associate in Applied Science degree if the student desires.
Program Competencies
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
Demonstrate effective communication skills in writing and speaking in a business environment.
Demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding of business letters, memos, reports and tables at a high level of speed and accuracy.
Apply basic language skills associated with the parts of speech, sentence formations, numerical expression, capitalization, and punctuation to business correspondence.
Demonstrate the ability to apply keyboarding and proofreading skills to a variety of correspondence (letters, memorandums, reports, e-mails, and tables) using formats such as straight-copy, edited, and dictated.
Use appropriate medical office procedures in areas of medical ethics, electronic health records management, telephone communications, incoming and outgoing mail, appointment scheduling, and simulation projects.
Define medical terminology used in healthcare delivery.
Define the contents of an electronic health record and the operation of an electronic medical record system.
Utilize a personal computer to prepare documents using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software and to perform basic navigation of the Internet.
Explain the legal aspects of handling electronic health records.
Execute accurate editing of a medical record.
