PSG 101 - Cardiopulmonary Structure and Function for Clinical Practice 2 Credit Hours
This course provides a focused exploration of cardiopulmonary function as it relates to polysomnography and sleep medicine. Students will learn about the structure and function of the heart and lungs, gas exchange, ventilation, and circulation, with an emphasis on their role in sleep-disordered breathing. The course covers common respiratory and cardiac conditions affecting sleep, including obstructive and central sleep apnea, hypoxia, hypercapnia, and heart rate variability. Students will gain hands-on experience analyzing polysomnographic data, interpreting electrocardiograms (ECG), and applying oxygen therapy and positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment strategies. Emphasis is placed on clinical assessment techniques, emergency response protocols, and adherence to industry standards to ensure patient safety in sleep studies.
